Migrating to RLM licensing

From 1st September 2022, the following will apply:

  • Genstat 22 and all future releases will move to the new licensing system – Reprise License Manager (RLM).
  • Earlier versions of Genstat will no longer be supported or available for renewal – specifically versions earlier than Genstat 21.
  • Upon your next renewal date, and without exception, you will be required to move to our new licensing system. We strongly encourage you to begin the move as early as possible and to carry out any testing procedures on the new licensing platform to make the transition as smooth as possible.

There are a few differences in the way each VSNi license type needs to migrate from the existing Flexnet licensing to RLM.

Student license

A student license is provided to students for their academic studies. It contains a smaller subset of features than our regular licensed software.

Moving to RLM
If you are a student at a university and your
Genstat installation is licensed via a university site license (this will be the case if you did not activate Genstat on your computer), then please contact your university IT staff and ask them to contact us in relation to upgrading your set up. You can copy us in on any emails so that we can liaise directly with your university IT staff.

Concurrent license

A concurrent license sits on a designated network server and can be used by individual users who have access to that server (This is the typical case for a research facility or any company where more than one person is using Genstat). This will usually have a license count of concurrent devices that are allowed to use this license: for example, an 8-user concurrent license can be used by many users, but only 8 users may use the license at one time / concurrently.

Moving to RLM
You will usually have an On-premises set up using Flexnet licensing to allow you to use Genstat on your network. With RLM we offer a cloud license which is a managed solution. If you are not yet at your renewal date you can still contact us to move to your new RLM license. We will generate a license for you, whereupon you will receive an activation code. If you still have an active license, you can manage your license in Genstat 22 by clicking Help > Manage License > Change license… You can then activate your new license.

Note: If you are not the site rep for your network, please ask your nominated site rep (usually the Genstat purchaser, or your IT department) to contact us so we can issue them an activation code for internal distribution.

If your network is like most networks, you will have Internet access to our licensing systems (where we host and manage your concurrent licenses to allow users to check out and check in licenses from your “license pool”). However, if you do not have access to these services, you will experience problems activating. If this is the case then contact your network administrator (usually your IT department), send them the activation code email you received and ask that they allow access to the ports referenced in the activation email and any systems that your network tests (found on the licensing details page) failed to access. Finally, we recommend that you copy us in on emails to your network administrator should they be unable to do this so that we can discuss further solutions.

Node-locked license

A node-locked license is an encrypted ‘key’ that is locked to a specific computer. Typically you are provided with an activation code that may entitle you to one or many of these licenses.

Moving to RLM
If you are not yet at your renewal date, you can still contact us to move to your new RLM license. We will generate a license for you, whereupon you will receive an activation code. If you still have an active license, you can manage your license in Genstat 22 by clicking Help > Manage License > Change license… You can then activate your new license.

Webstore code access

These are activation codes that can be used to generate a node-locked license (you will have entered this into our webstore after clicking the Register button on Genstat).

Moving to RLM
N/A – There is no longer a separation in RLM between a webstore code access license and a node-locked license as we deliver the license only as an activation code. This is mostly due to the shift in licensing model. In the past, a large part of our customer base was not Internet enabled, and so we had to develop a licensing system that could be activated offline. Now that most of our customers do have simple Internet access, we can instead deliver a simplified licensing solution. However, should you currently have a Genstat installation and no Internet access, please contact support for further help.

Genstat 22 and previous versions

Genstat 22 and all future releases will move to the new licensing system.

Earlier versions of Genstat will no longer be supported or available for renewal
– specifically versions earlier than Genstat 21.

Upon your next renewal date, and without exception, you will be required to move to our new licensing system. We strongly encourage you to begin the move as early as possible and to carry out any testing procedures on the new licensing platform to make the transition as smooth as possible.

You can install Genstat 22 alongside Genstat 21.
